DeMarcus Cousins has probably highlighted every Kings game on his calendar since last year’s trade. In the first game back in Golden 1 Center, the return of Boogie Cousins reminded every Kings fan why he was missed even more. Cousins made every other player on the court seem average from the very start. But it wouldn’t be easy for the New Orleans Pelicans as the Sacramento Kings came out equally as energized building an early 40-27 lead after one quarter. Sacramento surged out of the gate, scoring 70 first-half points and led by as many as 19 points in every quarter with the exception of the final period. Buddy Hield came out equally as focused scoring the Kings’ first basket on a fast break layup and finished with 7 points in the first quarter. Hield would finish with 12 points and 3 rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. Of course, he would be eager to face his old team in this ‘Revenge Game’ of sorts according to the media but this has slowly developed into a rivalry especially with Boogie Cousins on the opposing sideline.

Despite not having the services of starting center Anthony Davis who sat out with a quad injury, the Pelicans managed to climb back into the game in the second half with a stifling defense which held Sacramento to just 36 points. Each time Sacramento gained an advantage, the return of Boogie would keep the Pelicans in contention as he logged a game high 43 minutes. New Orleans would take the lead at the start of the fourth quarter and never relinquish it pulling off a 114 – 106 victory on the road. Boogie Cousins had a monster game with 41 points , 23 rebounds, 6 assists, a steal and a blocked shot. He left it out on the floor in front of a very supportive fan base who gave him a standing ovation upon his return to the team which drafted him with the 5th pick in the first round of the 2010 NBA Draft from Kentucky.
The Pelicans had just 4 players in double figures but offensively were still able to produce including a huge contribution from newly acquired veteran Jameer Nelson who had 18 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists off the bench. J’Rue Holiday added 20 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and a blocked shot. Sacramento had 7 players in double figures led by De’Aaron Fox with 14 points, 2 rebounds and 5 assists.
Key Statistics: The difference once again in this tough loss was the rebound statistics where New Orleans out rebounded the Kings 55 – 40. Both teams shot the ball fairly well as Sacramento shot 38 of 91 (46.9%) from the field and 7 of 20 (35%) from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Pelicans shot 42 of 86 (48.8%) from the field and connected on 13 of 32 (40.6%) from distance.
