In came the Los Angeles Clippers, a team struggling to find itself in the post Chris Paul era and coming off a win which snapped a 9 game losing streak. This could be one in the win column for the Sacramento Kings if they played their cards right and that is exactly what they did in the first quarter sprinting out to a 17-6 first quarter lead with 8 minutes remaining. Buddy would get his first points with less than a minute to play connecting on a jump shot but that would prove to only be the beginning of his night. By halftime, Buddy began raining buckets in the second quarter to help Sacramento build on an early lead.

It was Raining Buckets…
Hield hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter to finish with 11 points to help Sacramento take a 61-47 lead into halftime. And then it happened. No, nothing to do with raining buckets but instead the second half jinx hit the Kings once again as their offense sputtered to the tune of 10 points in the entire 3rd quarter. With 11 minutes remaining in the quarter, Sacramento was clicking on all cylinders with a 65-47 lead and the home town faithful were confident about getting a win at home. The Kings would not score a single point again until the 5 minute mark as the Clippers pulled to within a point 65-64, erasing an early 18 point lead in 6 minutes. By the end of the third quarter, Los Angeles had built a 76-71 lead and looked to close out Sacramento in grand style.
Despite 11 points in the half, Buddy Hield would go scoreless in the third quarter. His fourth quarter would be nothing short of magical as he scored 16 of the team’s 24 points and hit the game tying shot with 15.6 seconds remaining in the game. Despite the valiant effort by Hield, Blake Griffin would hit the game winning shot with 3.2 seconds remaining on an acrobatic fadeaway jump shot over Willie Caulie-Stein.
Buddy Hield’s performance in the final quarter also included back to back 3-pointers to force a tie. On the night, he finished with as the leading scorer for the Kings with 27 points to go along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a blocked shot. His statistics were even more impressive as he hit 10 of 18 from the field (55.6%) and connected on 7 of 9 from 3-point range (77.8%). It was arguably Hield’s best game as a Sacramento King despite putting up 30 points as a rookie after the infamous Demarcus Cousins trade, this game showcased Buddy’s ability to be the dominant scorer which Sacramento desperately needed. And to think, Buddy did all of this in just 25 minutes and coming off the bench. Head coach for the Clippers Doc Rivers said, “Buddy Hield is a scorer. We had trouble containing him. He does what he does,” as Buddy single-handedly put Sacramento on his back to keep the game close. One of the best shooting performances we have seen for the Sacramento Kings in years.
Key Statistics: Los Angeles Clippers hit 38 of 80 (47.5%) from the field including 9 of 28 (32.1%) from three-point range and sank 12 of 13 from the free throw line (92.3%). The Kings also hit 8 of 9 (88.9%) from the charity line. The battle for the boards went slightly to the Clippers who out rebounded the Kings 46-43. Both teams turned the ball over 18 times. A difference which stood out aside from the game winning shot was points in the paint where Blake Griffin was in attack mode, as the Clippers outscored Sacramento 46-32.
